Of Counsel | Houston Areas of Expertise • Business/Corporate • Real Estate/Transactional • Toxic Tort/Environment • Construction Defect Litigation • Financial Institutions Michael Bowdoin brings together an eclectic background – an undergraduate degree in microbiology, experience in both the legal and development ends of the construction industry, in house and at private law firms – to be an expert in environmental and construction issues. To that end, he lectures across the country on real estate, insurance coverage and mold issues. He serves on the standards writing committee for the Mold Remediation Standard, writes for national publications about the subject and sits on many committees on water damage restoration and the mold remediation business. One case that brought all these elements to bear involved an upscale nursing home concept that intended to roll out nationally. When constructing the prototype, a material was chosen that created mold in the walls. Mr. Bowdoin represented the installer of that material, and his client faced a $120 million construction defect lawsuit. Because of his expertise, Mr. Bowdoin took the lead in deposing life science, health and mold experts. He proved there was no health impact from the mold and that the developer scuttled the project for business reasons, not because the client created an unsafe indoor environment. Outside of his legal practice, Mr. Bowdoin helps to set up charitable
organizations for various religious ministries. Three recent projects
include a basketball camp for underprivileged kids, a homeless shelter
and a battered women's shelter. He works through his church to set
up these organizations by purchasing real estate, setting up the
business entity and helping them with grant money through his banking
contacts, matching the grant money to the people who need it. |
