Brown Sims Shareholder Kenneth Engerrand Featured in Newsweek on Maritime Salvage Law in Kai Sato Rescue
Shareholder Kenneth Engerrand was featured in Newsweek, offering expert commentary on the maritime law principles behind the rescue of Kai Sato, a California sailor recovered near Hawaii after nearly a month lost at sea.
Drawing on his deep experience in maritime law, Ken explained why global maritime rules have long been structured to encourage vessels to assist others in peril and how the law rewards those who do.
"For thousands of years, maritime law has protected and rewarded the salvor," Engerrand told Newsweek, noting that both the crew performing the salvage and the vessel owner share in the reward. "The greater the effort that is expended, the larger the reward."
He also highlighted how modern statutes and international conventions now allow life salvors to share in property salvage rewards, and how the law shields rescuers from liability for delays or incidental damage provided they don't act negligently.
